CAST is funded by private foundations, government agencies, and individual supporters Format Center CAST develops innovative, technology-based educational resources and strategies based on the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL calls for: multiple ways to represent materials to give learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge; multiple means of expression to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know; and multiple means of engaging the learner, to tap into learners’ interests, offer appropriate challenges, and increase motivation. By defining UDL and exploring its practical applications, CAST combines education research, practice, and policymaking. CAST staff includes specialists in education research and policy, neuropsychology, clinical/school psychology, technology, engineering, curriculum development, and Kindergarten -12 professional development. CAST’s achievements include: Creation or co-development of software such as Thinking Reader, WiggleWorks, and Bobby; leadership of federally-funded initiatives to develop and promote a National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS), which will guide the production and electronic distribution of curricular materials in accessible, student-ready versions, including Braille and Digital Talking Books; and provision of support for school teachers and administrators through professional development, consultation, publications, and online resources.
